Planning and hosting an engagement party is a popular part of the wedding process - and while engagement parties are typically hosted by the couple, a way to make it unique is by throwing a surprise party!

Whether you’re the friend or family member or the partner, hosting a surprise engagement party is a fun and unique way to celebrate an engagement! But, it can be a bit trickier than planning a traditional engagement party. Here are some tips and tricks for planning a surprise engagement party!

The Budget

A key aspect to planning a surprise engagement party is establishing a budget and outline of what you can afford. The first step is to find a venue and take into account all the fees that come with that venue. Think of location, services & parking as well as price when choosing a venue.

In addition to a venue, your budget also has to include outside vendors, decor, food, entertainment, and invitations. If budget is a factor, consider renting items to save on decor, host the party at someone’s host, or keep the guest list smaller to decrease your overall spend.

The Guest List

Once you’ve figured out your budget, the next step is planning the guest list. Invite friends and family who want to love and celebrate the couple (or you and your partner if you’re the partner planning it). Engagement parties tend to be more intimate so make sure the guest list only consists of close friends and family of the couple (or you and your partner)!

The biggest factor with the guest list is making sure guests know it’s a surprise! In this instance, there is no such thing as over-communication. If you’re planning for the couple, make sure everyone has fake plans in case they ask to get together on that date. If you’re planning for your partner, lean on support from people who will keep the secret to help!

The Theme and Decor

Once the guest list is finalized, now it’s time to come up with the theme and decor! Depending on you and your partner’s (or the couple’s) style, think outside of the box by reserving a coffee shop, bar, boutique, or park. These aren’t common options and may be open to a buyout for the evening. If you’re thinking of hosting at a restaurant, consider a private room to make it more intimate.

And, depending on the venue, you may not need to do a ton of decorating! Focus on simple added touches - like signature drinks, photos, and games - to make it a special occasion.

A Photographer

The last thing you want is to be concerned with taking pictures at the engagement party. Hiring a photographer will not only capture the evening but take the stress off of you! Ensure to communicate the desired shots and that should arrive early to capture the surprise entrance.

Once the photos are ready, consider making them into a gift for the couple (or your partner)! It’s a great way to compile and document the party that will be a treasured gift for years to come.
