9 Outdoor Wedding Mistakes Couples Make

Outdoor weddings are a staple for spring and early summer weddings - especially in Florida! Between the warm weather, sunshine, scenic backgrounds and more, outdoor weddings are a classic. However, outdoor weddings require different planning than indoor weddings - thanks to the unpredictable weather and elements. So, we’re sharing nine mistakes couples make when planning an outdoor wedding - and how to fix them!

Not Having a Plan B

The most common ruiner of outdoor weddings: unpredictable weather! As we know, Mother Nature is quite unpredictable (especially in Florida) so not having a backup plan in the event of rain or extreme wind is not good. Make sure to talk to with your outdoor wedding venue and wedding planner to come up with an alternate plan in the event of inclement weather.

Having a Regular Icing Cake

While we love regular icing for a wedding cake, a hot spring or summer day can turn that beautiful wedding cake into a puddle of frosting. Instead, try using fondant as your frosting as it will hold up in the heat.

Not Having Chair Covers

If you’ve ever sat on a bare chair in the Florida summer, you know what it’s like to burn the back of your legs! While it seems like a minor detail, adding cushions to your wooden or plastic chairs will save your guests from burning their legs.

Being SPF-less

The Florida sun is no joke - and the last thing you want is for guests to wake up after your wedding with a sunburn! Providing SPF for guests is not only a great way to keep your guests safe from the sun, but also makes a great wedding favor!

Serving the Wrong Foods

While this might seem like common sense, serving warm weather-friendly food will save you the stress of watching your beautiful cheese melt in the heat. If you can, have an indoor eating portion for your summer wedding or stick to serving foods that won’t spoil or melt in the heat.

Not Having Bug Spray

Bug spray is an absolute must for spring and summer outdoor weddings. No guest wants to be eaten alive and no couple wants to be focusing on the bugs instead of their vows. Place some bug spray in bathrooms or at common areas at your wedding. They also can be included in as a wedding favor!

Wearing the Wrong Clothing

Again, this may be a no-brainer, but choosing a wedding dress and bridesmaid outfits that won’t make you sweat like crazy is imperative for an outdoor wedding. Try choosing lightweight fabrics - like chiffon - or even a shorter dress to keep you and your wedding party cool and comfortable.

Not Enough Hydration

While alcohol is definitely a focal point at most wedding receptions, water is also a necessity! Keeping your guests H20 hydrated is super important. Include coolers of water around the bar area for guests to grab as they need.

Having a Super Early Ceremony

Early to mid-afternoon wedding ceremonies mean you’re saying “I do” in the sweltering heat! Instead, have the ceremony in the late afternoon or early evening when it’s a bit cooler. That way, you and your guests won’t fry in the afternoon heat!

Keeping these nine things in mind while planning your outdoor wedding will ensure you and your guests are happy, cool, and safe!
