So you decided to elope - congratulations! Whether you’re eloping to save money or because you prefer a smaller, more intimate ceremony or something in-between, elopements are a great alternative to larger, traditional weddings. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t require some planning! Here are 10 do’s & don’ts for planning the ultimate elopement.
Do Make it Personal
Elopements are just as (if not more) personal than traditional weddings! Choose a setting & style that feels authentic to you and your partner.
Don’t Feel Bad for Choosing to Elope
Unfortunately this is sometimes easier said than done, especially if your family is more traditional. But at the end of the day, it is you and your partner’s decision - so don’t feel bad about doing what is right for you!
Do Think About the Location (& Venue)
Whether you choose to elope 30 minutes or 30 hours away, be sure you are aware of the local logistics - including lodging, transportation, etc. When it comes to the venue, don’t forget to check the fine print so you aren’t hit with any surprises or issues on your elopement day!
Don’t Forget to Book a Photographer
Just because you aren’t having a traditional wedding does not mean you should skimp on the photographer (and/or a videographer!).
Do Make it Special - & Wear Something Fab
There is literally no rule that says your elopement can’t be fabulous. After all, it’s still your big day! Make it extra special by wearing an extravagant dress, personalizing your vows, splurging on dessert - or something that means a lot to you and your partner.
Don’t Forget to Plan - Especially When it Comes to Vendors
Yes, elopements are often more flexible but that does not mean you should forget about planning - especially when it comes to booking vendors! This is especially important for popular seasons and destinations.
Do Think About Hosting a Post-Elopement Celebration
What’s a ceremony without a celebration! Since elopements are more casual than traditional weddings, your post-elopement celebration can be quite literally anything you want! Invite friends and family out to your favorite restaurant, to go bowling, to go to the beach - the possibilities are endless.
Don’t Neglect Any Legal Requirements
Each state/country has different legal requirements, even with elopements. If you aren’t aware of your state’s requirements or if you’re eloping in a different state, don’t forget to get all the information beforehand!
Do Think About the Timeline
Again, an elopement is far more casual than a traditional wedding but that does not mean you shouldn’t have SOME form of a timeline. Even if it’s just a loose schedule, it will help keep you on track so you aren’t scrambled and stressed on your big day.
Don’t Forget to Have FUN!
Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to have FUN! Savor the small moments, be present, and remember that this day is about celebrating you and your partner’s love.
